I have tried to make bEasy require as little as possible in terms of
third-party tools. But to maximize ease of use and installation, I
had to rely on a few common tools.
You'll need:
- Space on a public webserver somewhere.
- Your webserver needs to have the ability to run CGI scripts.
- Your webserver needs to have Perl installed.
- The browsers you use with bEasy need to be able to handle frames
and execute JavaScript.
If they don't (like lynx), then you can still use bEasy to some
extent--you'll be able to visit the sites you've already
bookmarked--but navigating is cumbersome, and some
functions (like sorting bookmarks) are unavailable.
- Ideally, your browser should also use 'bookmarklets' (that is,
bookmarks with 'javascript:' as the protocol).
If it doesn't, you can still use bEasy, but some functions (like
adding new bookmarks) are more difficult.
Here are the web servers and browsers I've succesfully tested it with:
- Apache (several versions).
- Netscape on Linux and Windows.
- Mozilla for Linux and Windows.
- Internet Explorer for Windows.
And here are the browsers with known, uh, imperfections. (Feel free
to contribute some help here!)
- Internet Explorer on Mac OS/X works almost perfectly, but the add/file bookmarks behave erratically.
- Mozilla on Solaris 2.8 is mostly OK, but undocking doesn't work.
- Konqueror on Linux mostly works, but tends to open new windows
more often than it should.
- Nautilus does NOT work yet.
- Galeon does NOTwork yet.
